Donald passed away this morning, October 22, 2012. Much will be written about him.
Dale Velzy invited him to California to shape when he saw a board that Takayama had made in Waikiki. At 12, Donald came over and made the West Coast his home. Originally living in the South Bay, he later moved south to Oceanside, where he built Hawaiian Pro Designs into his personal statement on the topic of making fine surfboards. He always remained tight with Dale Velzy. When Dale passed, Donald was deeply shaken. Married to Diane, both a wife and business partner, Donald was far from a perfect human. A fun-loving guy, he enjoyed jamming the penny slots and letting them roll. He experienced his travails, many in plain view for us all, yet he was universally loved and respected—a sweet, sweet man who was Hawaiian-style, generous to a fault, giving to those he felt worthy, and, finally, a teacher—the highest attainment of the human condition. His contribution to surfing in general was broad and lasting, not only in what and how to ride, but in what it really meant. Among surfers that he mentored were Joel Tudor and David Nuuhiwa. Dale lovingly called Donald the “little guy” but we all knew that Donald was huge beyond size. He was a rock among pebbles, from a beach that is changing its look and character. Remember him.

Besides surfing, hiking and exploring a lot of the island I also bought a new (Soprano) Ukulele. It's made in Maui and has a birds-eye maple sides and bottom, spruce top, Koa wood neck and rosewood fret board. Modeled after the classic C.F. Martin soprano Uke this baby has tone, feel...and came with a hard shell case, too. It's from Santa Cruz shaper/boat repair guy Bob Miller. It's the biggest board I've ever owned. It's a 10'0" log called the 'Rambler.' I bought it primarily as a small wave board after checking out my buddy, Dexter's 9' 6" Miller BUT these boards work in sizable surf as well! This is the ultimate 'Log' to-be-sure! It has a bit of a hull design that works FANTASTIC (Thanks, Drew!). It has an interesting tail design as the hips blend off into the corners of the tail where they slightly turn up (!) making the board lock into the wave and be a bit more controllable for when one is going for the 'sweet spot' or a little 'tip time.' It also makes this board turn A LOT quicker/snappier than one would expect for a board this size. I was lucky enough to hit the local break on a decent low-tide day, with a surprising swell pumping through from waist to chest high and put it through it's paces. It's surprisingly F-A-S-T and light, yet is heavy enough to push through the flat spots and turns really, REALLY well. You can move all over it and it holds like walking on the sidewalk. Yep. I'm REALLY happy with this one.el space vatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13274212351065610910noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32985566.post-74210958941200183022012-02-25T21:30:00.003-08:002012-02-25T21:31:35.609-08:00The ocean, surfing and yes, even surfboard design make me very, very happy.

The Planing Totem from Hydrodynamica on Vimeo.
el space vatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13274212351065610910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32985566.post-25668354853538181872012-02-23T12:46:00.003-08:002012-02-23T12:51:28.252-08:00<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_y-wbsJDMDXXChF_jR1a4nk79pMpnlhXfgz58KylaBWFEutg3r2v3eUNgzlFaot-5n1fqOQfw3Sk-xhdmSI2S0vdZbmYdj1vaUd0dWBW1_CUwhZUa2N-sWy3z7U7at-8VMD6Y/s200/spring2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712436308532539490" />
Okay, it's towards the end of February and I'm still waiting for winter to hit (and summer from the past two years while I'm at it). Here's Cyrus Sutton, Ryan Burch and friends getting some smooth log time. dig it.

Familiar Faces - Sea Movies from www.KORDUROY.tv on Vimeo.
el space vatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13274212351065610910noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32985566.post-29157400827863389202012-02-11T21:24:00.000-08:002012-02-11T21:29:55.059-08:00<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW-cAeLlA-t_pAYf8C1liRxnP8uPAK4Y1s8-9OzvsjjfxweJN-jbWB3uZjUSfn_YlbgqxHJmnTv89X76neSKbGCijydFgu-V728atMha0eIfLoVDQ9TSXwTVRfBg7IhtwItCC7/s200/orange.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708116738034468626" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxL7pZsmqgyPCESB6bUGHRKjtwZXXbOO5tF9FJdEjqHb-WvUSo3Pi74PkYcuHU-8vVpB2fqJdbvA7cAHucHlw1jj2uU_I-NjcB7edJoxgSjBywt50bxv0Ws9Wc0Oky6hLUsLHi/s200/roofbike2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708116726236027762" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTRu0sUreLL4a968_deeviDQQq0NwdmELhfCN5xIBf_JRuXC_4ZCKfFhOYdlOS-znPp7Btn04RNLfoBX1IE9G5oezIAMNu1ixIp9Zk0D6Y-u7ITreXuTI_j4sOzNGhNIf1T6nN/s200/muni.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708116718362122754" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjucCvACMxLXteiVmsiFi3bGwWHgoP_Un1XcurzSSKqt0stIUeY3IFbOYcNE_fcn1_dkSAPYF2BeWsRbroAJugHIzlgfkAlPrxOBqvzIU9nayWp03fRAJlSPQpCkO2r3WBg9pA6/s200/clown2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708116709015511954" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaEN9P2s1a0wtj9V-JUL5w62sEZUP5bA7ZmdHMwTQxe4kSn5LplJMoosTn-uwGPsnL598QW_rf7NkspVgCpu6IBe1L1Nb-fEzkbTx0Tlb4P-OQw3NXT01D9ceHA86KU8jUtgVv/s200/blockfaces.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708116743994481874" />
Back in the city... there are days like these where it feels like I never left and that actually feels good. This morning I decided to not surf, sleep-in a little longer (6:45...Oooh) and walk instead. I really like my walks and I really like walking all over the hills and town of Fairfax. I almost always see something interesting or run into interesting people.
Today's 'find' is this hand made flyer. This flyer is great on so many levels. I'm playing music again BUT this time around it's acoustic music...mostly Ukuleles but I'll also be playing an occasional Dobro/slide/lap steel thing and acoustic guitar. My friend, Tom Borromeo the Uke master and collector and I are working some tunes out for an acoustic duo with harmony vocals. It'll be mostly old classic tunes (Dream a Little Dream, etc.), Beatles songs, Talking Heads and so on. I'll keep any and all up-to-date who may be interested when we'll play out.

Oh, I'll still be playing electric music again real soon.el space vatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13274212351065610910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32985566.post-29381238763551476112012-01-11T14:35:00.001-08:002012-01-11T14:40:15.553-08:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZBVdcnTkhOiuQvlRogQ1nMRWM75L6msed92vSTnToqF43y7N8tqjc4D6qa5iH7nDsoPEH1RUOdDP4ia0kqmKppa52XMTK0i2XJFWUoXs2wH-ak_w4mTv7tjxg2IXM0t-ItqqG/s200/pinktree.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696506998526120258" />
Temp, 33 degrees?
Working away on the graphic novel. It's been a bit slow going what with losing the novel through my hard drive going down last year and now rewriting it as I go along. However, I do really like how it's coming out since I've been rewriting it but it is going S-L-O-W. Man, this is hard work to be sure.el space vatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13274212351065610910noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32985566.post-21783980937613016832011-08-07T14:08:00.000-07:002011-08-07T14:17:33.443-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWhOIc19BS8U2DYwTVqpjElgE0iirSgNGnvWlkM78jnoVcuc8cA7u4IPNmKQF2gY6_Eog29BEBIZK4bqHsfI_HTetIp4XCD7WF5Yz39o37ZcQ3igoHza1QLy6Dgq0XmlT_QqjV/s200/photo-3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5638224599481440082" />
The Bolinas Dawn Patrol crew was representing our little beach and 2-Mile surf shop in Pacifica this past Saturday for the 12th Annual Kahuna Kupuna surf contest. I am happy to report that Jack Ellis (seated to the left) finished in First Place for the 65-69 age group and that Loren Moore (seated center) finished in Third Place of the same division. As for myself, (seated to the right closest to the camera) finished his breakfast in record time later that morning.... though both Loren and Jack may have convinced me to enter in my age bracket next year!
