Late summer nights in a valley town
Seeming so long ago It can't be reached
That never is far away in my dreams
Sagging, little houses too hot to sleep
Trains lumber by all steel and cold
In the wee, small hours on large wheels
Drowning out cricket operas in the starry night
If only for a few moments then silence returns
As a dog barks in a far-off corner of the neighborhood
Probably at a neighbor cat on an pre-dawn prowl
In old sleeping bags in my mother’s backyard
Looking up through the silhouette branches
At a crescent moon looking back at me
Thinking of a world far beyond my own
I can still hear it all as a man today
In the new dreams that won’t let me sleep
In this world I never knew existed when I was a boy.
